For years, Denver has been in a drought and has seen its reservoirs decline, yet people still water their lawn as though the water is infinite. It amazes me that people think that watering their lawn is a priority when it simply shouldn’t be. We need water to sustain life, and we are simply throwing it away. </span>Vincent Adamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10437021983957193531noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8389465096282214645.post-17143408059528955382012-11-16T08:45:00.001-08:002012-11-16T08:45:19.467-08:00The 4.1-1My students did such a wonderful job on their blogs! <div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Hello, my name is
Vince and I am very pleased to introduce you to my portfolio. For the first
half of the quarter, I studied the effects of urban congestion. I am interested
in this because I have lived in cities my entire life, and everyday I see the
good sides and the bad sides to having so many people packed into such a small
space. I am also interested in this topic because with all the challenges we
face with urban congestion, it is important to know the effects and causes so
that we can find intelligent solutions to the problems we face.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">While
investigating this topic, I came to the conclusion that there are two bad
effects to urban congestion and one good one. The bad effects may appear
obvious, but it is important to think about the causes to this as well. With
urban congestion there is increased crime and more pollution. The increased
crime comes not only because there are more people, and those people are closer
to each other, but because it puts different kind of people together, which can
often lead to problems. For example, because they don’t have as much as others,
poor people steal from and rob people who have more. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Increased pollution
comes about because there are obviously more people and more waste, but the
other more interesting effect is that because of congestion many people try to
find good solutions to managing pollution and waste. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Finally, the good
effect is connected to my previous idea: Congestion, while presenting
challenges, also urges people to work closely to solve common problems. Without
this congestion, maybe these problems go on unnoticed. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">If I could solve
these problems I would urge local communities to create taskforces to help
monitor pollution and crime and find ways to stop it. Many communities do this
with crimewatch and recycling and the like. But if I ran a city, I would make
it a bit more mandatory or offer some more tax breaks or something. I really
believe that in order to solve common problems we have to work together, and I
think government should do more to have its citizens do just that.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Thank you very
much for taking the time to explore my ideas and my portfolio. Please leave a
comment and I would be happy to have a dialogue with you. </span><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

Address the following in your blog post and publish it by Aug. 1.<br />
<ol>
<li>Paraphrase the main idea from the reading. </li>
<li>Paraphrase another provocative idea from the reading -- this can be something that is interesting to you, confusing or overall just something that caught your attention. Explain why it was provocative!</li>
<li>What did at least one of your classmates say about the question of America being innovative?</li>
<li>Finally, what is your response to the text and your classmate(s)? Do you agree, disagree, something inbetween?</li>

Everyday we have to tell our students to put their phones away. ARG! After all they distract them from learning!<br />
<br />
Despite our best pleas and threats, our good-cop and bad-cop discussions, we can't win this struggle.<br />
<br />
Technology is obviously omnipresent, and, in fact, it is so embedded in students' lives that they think about, learn about and understand their word through those pesky little devices that can drive us insane.<br />
<br />
So why NOT use them instead of forbid them? Furthermore, while we obviously have to make sure they don't abuse the power they have in their palms, there are ways to incorporate them into our instruction while engaging our students. ...<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Students starting the activity</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
This activity idea is not really original with what it does, and there are obviously a million ways to adapt this for certain needs and contexts, so I will simply explain what I did and hope you come up with something better. :-) Also, I embed the materials I used in links throughout, but I post them individually at the end for easy access as well. ...<br />
<br />
First, our Level 4 students at the <a href="http://www.du.edu/intl/elc/" target="_blank">ELC</a> are working on pre-collegiate skills, but because this is a more advanced level, we are building many of the skills they will need for college. In our reading course, we have been working on paraphrasing and outlining as builder skills for summary writing.<br />
<br />
So I had them read a text about <a href="https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54807483/Summer%20Quarter%2012/Reading%204.2/Week%20Five/History%20of%20American%20Education_ems%20edits_VA.doc" target="_blank">Education in The United States</a> for homework. I asked them to look for the main ideas (something we had talked about) and be ready to discuss those ideas in class. "Main ideas" are <a href="https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54807483/Summer%20Quarter%2012/Reading%204.2/Week%20Five/pp_mainidea.ppt" target="_blank">the explicit or implicit main idea or topic sentence in each paragraph</a>. I have them pull these out, and then later we pick the most important ideas (based on their purpose) and use those for <a href="https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54807483/Spring%20Quarter%2012/Reading%204.3/Week%20Four/pp_summary.ppt" target="_blank">summaries</a>.<br />
<br />
For the activity, I paraphrase the main ideas of each paragraph as I saw them (they will write paraphrases for a later text -- here I write it to help model paraphrasing for this purpose) and put them in a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code" target="_blank">QR code</a><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP6NgDvSeDpuAtFzmKs5GlDxexXN5VEb2CSNlCbUoO0_SDrWrdmDlHc0BiXia3rJZUg6nYFBSxq24J_hHRiAZQTXXiRUnrvOL-DIxwbQiWK2jN2vjIjNU4egGRgTwxXu8cfXZLIADElzRY/s1600/photo-3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP6NgDvSeDpuAtFzmKs5GlDxexXN5VEb2CSNlCbUoO0_SDrWrdmDlHc0BiXia3rJZUg6nYFBSxq24J_hHRiAZQTXXiRUnrvOL-DIxwbQiWK2jN2vjIjNU4egGRgTwxXu8cfXZLIADElzRY/s200/photo-3.JPG" width="195" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ali after scanning for the idea</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I did this by using a QR Code Generator (<a href="http://goqr.me/" target="_blank">I use this one</a>, but there are many other if you google for it). Then you put in the link, picture, or in this case, the paraphrased sentences and create a QR code. These codes, if you didn't click on the link above for more info, are simply cryptic codes usually used for hidden messages. It is widely used is marketing and advertising and is all the rage among the smartphone crowd these days.<br />
<br />
Thus, to complete this activity, your students will need a smartphone and a QR code scanner for their smartphone. For our school this is easy because many of the international students have and are attached to their smartphones and know all about the fancy new apps available.<br />
<br />
But back to the activity: <a href="https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54807483/Summer%20Quarter%2012/Reading%204.2/Week%20Five/QR-code%20activity.docx" target="_blank">I randomly ordered the paraphrases of the paragraphs' main ideas</a>, so the QR coded sentences were out of order from the original text. Then I formed small groups, made sure at least one student from the group had a smart phone and had downloaded the QR code scanner. Then students scanned the codes, wrote down the out-of-order sentences on <a href="https://dl.dropbox.com/u/54807483/Summer%20Quarter%2012/Reading%204.2/Week%20Five/QR%20Code%20and%20Main%20Idea%20ScrambleNames.docx" target="_blank">a collection sheet</a>, and then after they got all the paraphrases, they reordered them as they appeared in the original text. Thus, this activity works with their basic comprehension of the ideas.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCJO9ykCMD1Ni63OeDOwucM1RXkv5e3SMvf5tS80pfSpLUvsBxPooUjEtHxP56Jfoz_f_JAlhpKY3vTG8DaONkFw2VNoufceYbhwMTk6GDgqTaSYsSG_cQySpWFZqgTIKATS5OM7_6XoEr/s1600/photo-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCJO9ykCMD1Ni63OeDOwucM1RXkv5e3SMvf5tS80pfSpLUvsBxPooUjEtHxP56Jfoz_f_JAlhpKY3vTG8DaONkFw2VNoufceYbhwMTk6GDgqTaSYsSG_cQySpWFZqgTIKATS5OM7_6XoEr/s200/photo-1.JPG" width="179" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Saad and Ahmed decoding!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
To make this a game, I told students I would offer bonus points for the group that completed it first and accurate. The bonus points were really a small, insignificant amount, and I am not usually one to bribe students, but they like it, and the points become more of a trophy.<br />
<br />
Finally, we debriefed the text and ideas after the game element, and, honestly, students seemed to understand the ideas well -- though, granted, this text's ideas are relatively informational and straight-forward. Also, students seemed to enjoy it, were engaged and thought it was a neat way to work with text. I asked a couple of my students what they thought, and they said it was helpful and interesting -- though what else are they going to say to someone who grades them?<br />
<br />
So that's it. Below are the basic sheets I created so you don't have to read through everything above to get the essentials.<br />
<br />
Please let me know what you think of this activity, and PLEASE let me know if you do something similar. I would love to hear your ideas! :-)<br />

<br />
For this project, I have written an argument essay where I argue that we need to teach two languages instead of just English in our public school system. The annotated bibliography presents my reading and research on this topic, and the vocabulary section provides useful words for helping you understand this topic. <br />
<br />
Below is a video introduction to my portfolio and list of contents. <br />

I hope you enjoy! Please feel free to post comments and opinions!<br />

In “English-Only Teaching Ignores Bilingual Benefits,” Andrea
Dyrness argues that being bilingual improves thinking skills, helps you pay
more attention and can delay brain diseases like Alzheimer’s. The author starts by describing how many in
her hometown of Hartford, Connecticut have a “poisonous” view of the immigrants
who speak Spanish. She believes people advocate for the English-Only law due to
an “irrational fear” that using Spanish in schools threatens “the primacy of
English.” She ends with a narrative explaining how a school administrator was shocked to learn
her child spoke Spanish and asked if they needed services. However, her child
is bilingual, which was surprising to the school official. The writer’s story
served to show people that being bilingual or speaking a language other than
English isn’t something bad, and then she pleas that schools will research and
discover the positives of bilingual education. </div>

In “Boston Students Struggle with English-Only Rule,” James
Vaznis presents a study showing that non-native English speakers have struggled
since the Boston School district required all subjects be taught in English.
Furthermore, the study showed that this policy has also doubled the drop out
for non-native speakers in high school.
According to the article, the reason for this is the school isn’t
assessing these students correctly, and they are unable to communicate with
parents and solicit their help in teaching these students. The study in the
article concludes that teaching English only hasn’t worked in Boston, and says
that people are debating whether to adapt to the law or get rid of it.Vincent Adamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10437021983957193531noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8389465096282214645.post-60231158943705457692012-05-28T12:58:00.000-07:002012-05-28T13:08:16.111-07:00Dual-Language Vocabulary<div style="color: black;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
In America, we are used to the world wanting to speak
English. After all, the United States is a leader in the world economy, and it
is a benefit for many throughout the world to learn English. This creates an
attitude in this country where many think that learning languages outside of
English isn’t important. However, learning multiple languages is a benefit for
everyone, including Americans, and I believe our schools should focus on
teaching dual-language immersion, and, specifically, we should be teaching
English alongside Spanish.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Some believe that we should teach only English and that this
country should adopt it as its official language. This, I believe, limits us and
our children. The United States, as most know, is the land of immigrants. Sure,
many people here speak English, but many don’t as well. We have many people
with Chicano/Latina roots who speak Spanish. Only speaking one language limits
our ability to speak with many people who are and becoming citizens of this
country. This has obvious consequences for the economy because many people who
work and produce in this country speak Spanish. <span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal;"></span></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal;">But
outside of the economy, we’re also limited culturally. Separating people by
language prevents us from learning about their culture in deep, meaningful ways.
For example, I learned from the phrase “Abo Trenton” (أبو ترينتون) in Arabic.
Were I just to learn it through an English translation, I would know it means “father
of Trenton.” (My son is named Trenton, so anyone could just swap in the name of
his/her child). But by learning it from people who speak Arabic, I also learned
that this phrase shows a great source of pride from being a father. We often
say in English, “I am the son of..,” but this reverses it and gave me insight
into the importance of family in Arabic culture. This shows I am the one who is
privileged to have my son and is, thus, a beautiful statement about the
importance of your children. Language is where we define our thoughts and
ideas, and exchanging them through multiple languages is essential to making us
better people and a better country. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal;"></span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal;">Teaching
only one language also creates a monocultural worldview. This means that people
believe only their culture matters. If we expect everyone to learn English we’re
saying that “sure, we can exchange ideas, but ours are better and you have to
conform to our culture.” This is a hostile and unproductive way to be a global
citizen. We want our children and citizens to be open minded and respect all
cultures on their terms, and learning another language through dual immersion
urges people to see the value of multiple languages equally.</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-weight: normal;">Dual
immersion means that schools teach at least two languages at the same time. How
it works now is schools focus on teaching non-English speakers English. I argue
for teaching Spanish alongside English mostly because it makes sense given a
large segment of the population of Spanish speakers in this country. However,
the second language isn’t as important as what teaching two languages accomplishes.
It allows us to communicate with more people, learn new ideas through language
and it shows that all cultures and languages are equal. In a world that is
connecting in more and more ways, I believe dual language makes us, and the
world, a better place. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 115%;">Part of learning a language is immersing yourself. This means surrounding
yourself with that language and <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><u>using</u></i></b> it rather than memorizing
and translating it. To accomplish this goal, we have combined projects in our
classes to assure what you’re learning and working on in one class continues in
your other classes. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: 10.5pt; line-height: 115%;">This immerses you because you use your background knowledge,

classes you’re taking at the ELC.</span><br />

and link all the pieces together to make it coherent. All elements are tied
together to the topic/issue you’ve done for your argument paper, so in effect
you are presenting your knowledge on that topic using the various assignments
we’ve done in class.</span><br />

It was great to watch the students have fun and show off how awesome they are.<br />
<br />
These are some pictures I took, though they aren't great. My camera started acting up, so I stopped taking pictures. Besides I wanted to focus my efforts on enjoying the moment.
